Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?

The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Stephen Forte

Chief Strategy Officer

Stephen Forte is the Chief Strategy Officer of the venture backed company, Telerik, a leading vendor of developer and team productivity tools. He is the co-founder and executive director of AcceleratorHK, Hong Kong’s first startup accelerator. Involved in several startups, he was the co-founder of Triton Works, which was acquired by UBM (London: UBM.L) in 2010 and was the Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of Corzen, Inc., which was acquired by Wanted Technologies (TXV: WAN) in 2007. Prior to Corzen, Stephen served as the CTO of Zagat Survey in New York City (acquired by Google in 2011) and also was co-founder of the New York-based software consulting firm The Aurora Development Group. Stephen is also a Certified Scrum Master, Certified Scrum Professional, PMP, and also speaks regularly at industry conferences around the world. He has written several books on application and database development. Stephen has an MBA from the City University of New York. Stephen is also a board member of the Scrum Alliance. An avid mountain climber, Stephen leads a trek in the Mt. Everest region every fall to raise money for charity. Stephen lives in Hong Kong with his wife. @worksonmypc

Paul Orlando

Paul Orlando is Co-founder & Director of mobile startup accelerator AcceleratorHK and also started and runs a lean startup bootcamp that he runs from Hong Kong [startupsunplugged.com/bootcamp]. Previously, he co-founded a startup in New York and worked in China. You can usually find him discussing business models at coffee shops. He speaks Mandarin and is ok in Cantonese.

Adeh DeSandies grew up in the Silicon Valley, and has had a passion for technology ever since. After graduating from Stanford University at the height of the dot-com boom, he has been involved in many startups, first as an engineer and later as an advisor. He is currently working with startups both in the Silicon Valley and in China, helping small teams bring their products to market.

A serial entrepreneur based in Shenzhen since 2003, John continues to operate globally in the data and energy tech fields. In the data field, John established the world’s first national repository for geotech data and eventually ran IHS Energy (the largest data supplier to global oil industry).
